Short brief

"This project is being developed for an external client, Autotelic Design. They requested a FPS Battle Royale, to compete with Player Unknown Battlegrounds & Fortnite. With a unique theme and mechanics"

Description

The Survivors is an Arctic Western Battle Royale where 100 players fight for a claim in the Yukon gold rush.
In order to be different than most battle royales, The survivors covers some unique mechanics like the Scrap System, which allows the player to upgrade their weapon per game.

Responsibilities

  • Design & implement most amount of player feedback

  • Design & scripted the scrap system

  • Design & scripted the loot system

  • Design & scripted various small game systems (destructible objects, utility items, etc.)

  • Design & balance the bandits camps

  • Creative problem solving on the game's feedback
     

In this project I had to chance to do both technical implementation, and UI/UX of features. This allowed me to create a streamlined experience for the player. Which I believe is essential to any game.

Some of the features I worked on, but not limited to:

- Scrap System; lets the player upgrade their weapon with scrap they find in the world. Players can customize their weapon to their liking; weapon's behaviour can change entirely if you use lots of upgrades.

- Loot System; picking/dropping weapons/items/ammo, the goal is to eliminate the need for menus as much as possible, to streamline the game and put the focus on the core gameplay.

Scrap System

"One of the fun things while making the Scrap System, was to see how Twitch streamers and YouTubers interact with the system. As a result I could easily iterate the system upon their feedback.

People clearly enjoyed creating crazy combinations, and changing upgrades on the go."

Player seeking shelter from the storm, and found some new loot

Contributions include: Loot prompt, Kill Feed, Squad healthbar, Inventory prompts/displays

Challenges

  • First time I worked on a first person shooter

  • First time I worked on a massive project of this scale

  • First time I had to implement features for multiplayer, and use RPC calls

  • Lots of features were complex, like the looting system

Achievements

  • Released on Steam, with over 1000 users

  • Update features based on community feedback

  • Going through the entire game development process

  • Communication and production improved a lot, and were tested constantly

  • The project won "NHTV best Tech 2018"
